\nPosition Overview
\nThe Ophthalmologist at Kigutu Hospital and Women\u2019s Health Pavilion is responsible for providing
\ncomprehensive eye care services, including prevention, diagnosis, medical and surgical management of
\nophthalmologic conditions. The role supports the hospital\u2019s mission to deliver high-quality, patient-centered
\ncare while strengthening clinical capacity through education, quality improvement, and multidisciplinary
\ncollaboration.
\nThe Ophthalmologist contributes to clinical excellence, service development, and training of healthcare staff
\nwhile ensuring adherence to institutional policies, national guidelines, and international standards of care.<\/p>\n

Key Responsibilities<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Clinical Care<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Provide outpatient and inpatient ophthalmologic consultations, diagnosis, and management of eye
\ndiseases and visual disorders.
\n\u2022 Perform all ophthalmic procedures and surgeries within the scope of hospital capacity and clinical
\nprivileges.
\n\u2022 Manage emergency ophthalmologic cases and provide timely referrals when advanced care is required.
\n\u2022 Develop and implement treatment plans, ensuring continuity of care and appropriate follow-up for
\npatients.
\n\u2022 Promote preventive eye health services, including screening for refractive errors, glaucoma, diabetic
\nretinopathy, and childhood eye conditions.<\/p>\n

2. Medical Education and Training<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Provide clinical teaching and mentorship to general physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals.
\n\u2022 Support capacity building of staff in basic eye examination and early identification of ophthalmologic
\nconditions.
\n\u2022 Participate in Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions and clinical case discussions.
\n\u2022 Contribute to development of clinical guidelines, protocols, and training materials related to eye care
\nservices.
\n\u2022 Support community outreach and awareness activities related to eye health promotion and prevention
\nof blindness.<\/p>\n

3. Quality Improvement and Patient Safety<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Ensure adherence to clinical standards, infection prevention and control (IPC) practices, and patient
\nsafety protocols.
\n\u2022 Participate actively in quality improvement initiatives, audits, and Morbidity & Mortality (M&M)
\nreviews when applicable.
\n\u2022 Monitor clinical outcomes and contribute to improvement of ophthalmology service indicators.
\n\u2022 Promote accurate clinical documentation and appropriate use of hospital information systems.
\n\u2022 Support implementation of evidence-based practices in ophthalmologic care.<\/p>\n

4. Administrative Responsibilities<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Maintain accurate patient records, procedure logs, and service reports.
\n\u2022 Participate in departmental planning, service development, and resource utilization discussions.
\n\u2022 Assist in forecasting equipment, medication, and consumable needs for ophthalmology services.
\n\u2022 Ensure proper use and maintenance of ophthalmology equipment.
\n\u2022 Contribute to preparation of periodic clinical and service activity reports as required by hospital
\nleadership.<\/p>\n

5. Team Collaboration and Institutional Engagement<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams including internal medicine, pediatrics, maternity,
\nemergency, and nursing departments.
\n\u2022 Coordinate referrals and co-management of patients with systemic diseases affecting vision.
\n\u2022 Support respectful, patient-centered communication with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
\n\u2022 Participate in hospital meetings, clinical reviews, and institutional initiatives.
\n\u2022 Foster a culture of professionalism, teamwork, and continuous improvement within the hospital.<\/p>\n

6. Qualifications and Requirements<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 Medical Doctor (MD or equivalent) with specialization in Ophthalmology.
\n\u2022 Valid medical license to practice medicine.
\n\u2022 Minimum of 3\u20135 years of clinical experience in ophthalmology practice preferred.
\n\u2022 Experience working in resource-limited or rural healthcare settings is an advantage.
\n\u2022 Demonstrated commitment to teaching, mentorship, and quality improvement.
\n\u2022 Strong clinical judgment, communication, and teamwork skills.
\n\u2022 Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and culturally diverse environment.
